Erik (b. 1944) has been a member of the European Parliament since 1999.
He studied social geography and later taught geography before becoming a civil servant. In the 1970s he was elected to the Amsterdam City Council. From 1982 to 1995 he served as a Provincial Councillor in South Holland. He became the national vice-chair of the Green Left Party, a position which he held until 1995.
At the beginning of 1996, Erik Meijer left Green Left for the Socialist Party. In 1998 he became chair of the SP branch in Delfshaven, Rotterdam’s poorest district, where he lives.
