UK Chancellor Gordon Brown
attacked for his EU criticism
It has emerged that Britain in Europe campaign organisation used a meeting with Gordon Brown warn him to tone down his critique of EU policies, or risk damaging the ‘yes’ campaign on the European Constitution. During the meeting, which had originally been planned as a chance to discuss tactics for the referendum, Lords Howe and Brittan are reported to have attacked Mr Brown particularly sharply for using the run up to EU finance ministers’ meetings to attack EU failings. A Treasury source said, “The idea that Gordon Brown is going to be lectured by a group of former Tories about whether he should stand up for the British national interest shows how out of touch they are.”
