French Socialists back EU Constitution
As expected, the French Socialist party voted yesterday to support the EU Constitution in the French referendum on the issue. Nearly 80 percent of the 120.000 party members cast their votes in the internal ballot. Around 55 percent voted for the Constitution after a fierce campaign. The Socialist Party leadership now face a huge task in trying to undo the damage to the national ‘yes’ campaign in France caused by the deep split in the party, and the bitter criticism of the Constitution by a wide range of Socialist politicians and almost half of the party’s members.
