Chirac worried about referendum
An article in Le Monde says that French President Jacques Chirac is worried about the result in the countrys referendum on the EU Constitution. It says he is relying on the campaigns of the UMP, UDF and Socialist parties for adoption of the treaty. He has symbolically placed himself at the head of the yes camp and intends to meet the heads of the parties as soon as possible. A friend of Chirac has said, The main political forces are for yes and probably the media, but that is not enough to be sure of the result.
Another article says that Nicolas Sarkozy has given assurances that those in the ruling UMP party who are against the EU Constitution will be given a voice in the referendum campaign. According to Brice Hortefeux, deputy Secretary General of the party, The position of those in the no camp will be taken into consideration, they will have room for expression and probably (financial) means.
An Editorial in Le Monde says that the Right seems more resigned than convinced about the EU Constitution. Another article looks at the fact that the no camp continued to gain ground throughout the French referendum campaign on the Maastricht treaty, which France endorsed by 51 percent to 48.9 percent against.
