Country Information

This section provides information about the EU countries. Currently eleven states have decided to hold a referendum on the EU Constitution. The question is still undecided in eight member states, while in five countries it seems to be unlikely, that a referendum will be held. The Parliament of Lithuania has already ratified the constitution.

Overview

Prime Minister Anders Fogh Rasmussen has recently presented a proposal to hold the referendum on 27th of September 2005 but after French and Dutch no votes Danish Foreign Minister Per Stig Moeller hinted on 13 June that his country might abandon a referendum plans.

The Danes rejected greater EU integration in two previous referendums (Maastricht 1992, Introduction of the Euro 2000 as well as the Danish North Atlantic provinces Faroe Islands and Greenland have rejected EU membership).

Denmark has four opt-outs from EU concerning EU military, the euro, the supranational EU justice policy and the EU citizenship). There is a majority in the Danish Parliament in favour of the EU constitution. However two parties, some MP's in parties working for a yes and two Danish movements in the EU parliament reject the EU constitution. As well as a broad no-campaign is growing with representation from political sides.

The outcome of the Danish referendum is very unpredictable. Some opinion polls have been in favour of a no and some of a yes. However the latest are in favour of a yes.
