Austria: Referendum denied

Unanimously, the Austrian Parliament voted against a referendum on the EU Constitution (March 3, 2005).

Activities for a referendum ignored
The "Werkstatt Frieden & Solidarität" (Workshop Peace & Solidarity) in Linz has gathered 5.000 signatures of individuals demanding a referendum. The group wants to protect the neutrality established in the Austrian constitution. According to their comments, the neutrality is endangered by the regulations deepening the common foreign and defence policy.

Also the umbrella organization of the Austrian trade Union (Österreichischer Gewerkschaftsbund - ÖGB) has demanded a referendum.
