Internet poll shows slight majority for Dutch no vote on EU constitution.

An Internet poll of Dutch voters shows that 58.2 would vote against the European Union constitution in a referendum called for June 1, the ANP news agency reported Sunday.

The poll is the second in the Netherlands in as many days that gives a majority for the "no" vote. Earlier surveys commissioned by the government showed a slight majority in favour of the constitution.

Sunday's poll, carried out by the independent political research centre IPP, showed that of the 7,500 people questioned 58.2 percent are against the Dutch government ratifying the constitution against 41.8 percent in favour of it.

The poll was carried out among people who visited a special website hosted by the IPP. The site gives an independent advise on how to vote in the referendum by asking people to respond to 25 positions and calculating how compatible their answers are to the positions taken in the constitution.

Another Internet poll published Saturday by well-known pollster Maurice de Hond showed that of the 32 percent of Dutch people who intend to vote, 52 percent are planning to vote against the constitution.

The Dutch referendum is consultative and not binding for the government.
However the two biggest Dutch parties, the ruling Christian Democrat CDA and the opposition PvdA labour party said they would follow the referendum outcome if the voter turnout for the referendum is over 30 percent.
