Grand old men of French left boost 'yes' vote

The entry of French left-wing heavyweights such as Jacques Delors and Lionel Jospin into the campaign has given the 'yes' vote a boost. The 'yes' vote now leads in the most recent polls.

They may be yesterday's men, but entry into the referendum campaign of French Socialist Party veterans such as former Commission President Jacques Delors and former Socialist Prime Minister Lionel Jospin, seems to have made a difference.

A fresh Le Figaro poll gives the 'yes' vote 53 per cent with another poll giving 51 per cent to the yes side.

Delors threw himself into the campaign with eloquence and aggression when he accused parts of his own political hinterland of lying in an interview with Nouvel Observateur:

"It is easy to spread fear when you manipulate the text of the Constitution. Read it instead of listening to them!" said Delors, arguing that the Constitution places as great an emphasis on the social aspect as on the economic.

He also pointed out that the principle of safeguarding undistorted competition has existed since the European treaty of Rome of 1957.
