International Conference at Felix Meritis

MEDIA INVITATION

Why say “No” to this EU Constitution?

On Saturday, 21 May at the Felix Meritis the European No Campaign will hold a one-day conference (11.00-18.00) with Dutch and international speakers. The conference shall give an answer to the question: Why say “no” to the EU Constitution?

Among the international speakers will be Marta Andreasen, the former Chief Accountant of the EU Commission who was dismissed because she insisted on the fact, that the EU accounting system is vulnerable to fraud on a massive scale. Bernard Jenkin, a Conservative Party Member of British Parliament and Shadow Minister for Trade & Industry, will elaborate on the British perspective of the EU Constitution. The Dutch speakers - coming from different political camps - will provide interesting viewpoints with Harry van Bommel MP, Willem Bos, Prof Arjo Klamer, Prof Harrie Verbon and Syp Wynia. Other speakers come from Germany, Denmark, Sweden, Ireland, Poland, Slovakia and the Czech Republic.

The European No Campaign (ENC) is a cross party network of individuals and campaigns from all across the EU who exchange information, strategy and cooperate to make the no-side win. The network shows that to oppose this constitution goes perfectly together with a pro European attitude. On the contrary: you have to reject this constitution if you want Europe to become more democratic, free and prosperous and to benefit from its diversity.

The proposed EU Constitution is a confirmation of the previous EU as an “EU of the Eurocrats”. It helps the powerful to get more power and to avoid real reform which would enhance democracy and develop an “EU of the Citizens”.

Supporters of the ENC may have different reasons why this project must be stopped, but all of them share the concerns about a transfer of sovereignty to empower an insufficiently controlled structure and an increasing lack of democracy. They all agree that this constitution does not provide what Europe needs now.

“It is an unbelievable arrogance to claim that literally millions of Europeans from all across Europe who are opposing this particular constitution would be anti-Europeans or just to stupid to understand it”, says Thomas Rupp, the German coordinator of the European No Campaign. “The ENC gathers pro European supporters that are as diverse and different as Europe itself but share a serious concern about its future. With the conference in Amsterdam we want to show the Dutch opponents to the EU Constitution that they are not alone!”
