Latvia approves European constitution.
Latvia's parliament has approved the European constitution. Seventy-one of the 100 MPs voted in favour, well over the required two-thirds majority. Latvia, one of the new members of the European Union, is the tenth country to approve the draft constitution.
The country's vote in favour of the constitution comes one day after a clear majority of Dutch voters rejected the document in a referendum. Latvia's Foreign Minister Artis Pabriks said that Europe should look to the future, not to the past.
Danish Prime Minister Fogh Rasmussen has announced that the referendum scheduled to be held in Denmark in September will go ahead as planned. However, he added that this might change after the coming EU summit in Brussels.
The next referendum on the European constitution is to be held in Luxembourg on July 10th.
