Opponents to EU Constitution
succeed in elections
Czech Republic’s social liberal government suffered a defeat in the local elections and the first round of senat elections. Clear winner of the two days lasting vote is the opposition of conservatives (ODS) and communists (KSCM). This was announced by the election authoriy in Prague last Sunday. Both parties – ODS and KSCM - are regarded as EU critics and oppose the EU Constitution. Around 100 days after the change of government these elections were an important indicator about the acceptance of the new social-democratic Prime Minister Stanislav Gross (CSSD). In June 2006 the Czech Republic will hold a referendum about the EU Constitution.
