Country Information

This section provides information about the EU countries. Currently eleven states have decided to hold a referendum on the EU Constitution. The question is still undecided in eight member states, while in five countries it seems to be unlikely, that a referendum will be held. The Parliament of Lithuania has already ratified the constitution.

Germany

12 May 2005 - German Bundestag ratifies the EU Constitution.
27 May 2005 - After the parliament the German Bundestag adopts the EU Constitution and completes the ratification. Ninth country that ratifies the EU Constitution (under reserve of an acceptence by the German supreme court - judgement to be expected during 2007).

On 12 Jun 2005 there is a majority AGAINST the EU Constitution: 40% Yes – 43% No - Der Spiegel/TSN Infratest – 12 Jun 2005

Germany's lower house of parliament gave strong backing to the treaty on 12 May, in a move designed to send a signal of support to the French Yes campaign ahead of the referendum in France on May 29.

Parliamentary supporters of the constitution predicted they would easily exceed the necessary two-thirds majority in the 601-seat Bundestag, since all the mainstream political parties back the new charter.

The upper house of parliament, representing the regional states, gave Germany's final endorsement to the treaty in a vote on May 27.

The struggle for a referendum is lost.
